How we refresh a bed

Old straw or mulch that has matted down gets cleared out, and weeds are pulled by hand. We don’t spray herbicide. Bed edges are cut clean so the lawn stops creeping in.

Then the bed is filled evenly and tucked in around shrubs, along walks and against the house. Pine straw goes down thick enough to cover the soil completely, because it settles over the first few weeks.

Fall is the best time for pine straw around Mobile. Fresh straw is easy to get, and it insulates roots through winter and looks good going into the holidays.
